Deciding what is the best attack unit based on resource cost is a bad way to go about it. Given that you can attack NPC towns without losses, there is no reason that you can not have all your barracks fully maxed out with tons of resources left over.

Build 4k Ballista, build 4k transporters, recruit 8 heroes farm 8 level 5 barb towns. Poof, you can max out your barracks with whatever you want, while taking zero losses.

Because it is so easy to get insane amounts of resources, there is no point in even factoring those in.

That leaves time to recruit, range, and Rally Point caps as the main factor in deciding what troops are the best.

As example, you can train 9 warriors in the time it takes to train 1 swordsmen, and 9k warriors will beat 1k sword every time with only 492 losses.

But that doesn't mean you want to send in wave after wave of 100k warrior armies into a town that has 100k sword in it, along with a bunch of Archer Towers and ballista. Because of the Rally point cap, you have to build strong armies with a good bang for their buck, not just huge armies.

Then there is range, and the fact that a troop type will not advance during a turn it is attacking. 100K archers will slaughter 170k sword with 1k losses if you also send in one of every melee troop type with the archers. Why?

Because the 170k sword will stop to kill the one scout, and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the 170k sword will stop to kill the one Cav, and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the 170k sword will stop to kill the one Cat and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the 170k sword will stop to kill the one pike, and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the 170k sword will stop to kill the one sword and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the 170k sword will stop to kill the one warrior and not advance that turn, letting the 100k archers rain down hell on them.

Then the what is left of the 170k sword army after being hit by 100k archers for several turns will run full speed at the archers. By the time they get there, they will only be able to kill 1k archer.

Finally, there are losses to consider. Attack 70k warriors with 70k sword, and you will win, but you will take 12k in losses. That is troops you have to rebuild. Attack with 70k archer, and you will take zero losses, and will not have to rebuild any troops.

Assuming you do not have 50 scrips to make level 10 Barracks, the Ballista is the best unit in the game, followed by the archer if you do not have a large number of level 9 barracks.

Sword is worthless. Training swords when you could be training archers or Ballista will get you killed. They are too expensive to be a good meat shield.
